A neurologist specializing in global health Dr. James C Johnston <https://www.behance.net/drjamescjohnston> is the founding partner of Global Neurology Consultants, a partnership of physicians and surgeons dedicated to improving worldwide neurological equity. The specialty of neurology in global health is a recent concept, and GlobalNeurology® may be the first international group of neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroethicists working together as a team in this field.

Dr. Johnston is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Board Certified in Neurology with Additional Certification in Neurorehabilitation. In medical practice for 30 years, he is also an Attorney in the United States and a Barrister of the High Court of New Zealand. This combination of medical and legal training and experience ensures he is uniquely qualified to navigate the intricacies of dealing with international medical law concerns that impact healthcare. Dr. Johnston is an Honorary Professor of Neurology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia where he has served since inception of the Department of Neurology residency training program. He established the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Global NeuroCare® to advance neurological services in developing regions, especially the sub-Saharan African nation of Ethiopia which is arguably the most medically underserved country in the world. Global Neurocare is accredited by the World Health Organization, and focuses on forming collaborative partnerships with local medical facilities in developing countries to improve neurological care.

Global NeuroCare® is one of the few organizations to hold Special Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) ECOSOC. This allows Dr. Johnston to make policy recommendations directly to the UN intergovernmental bodies and engage with other civil society organizations, and participate in the UN related conferences and meetings. He has presented several statements and policy recommendations at the UN High Level Political Forum and other conferences which were adopted and published, all contributing to advancing healthcare in developing regions.

Dr. Johnston has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and letters in a wide variety of journals including the Journal of Legal Medicine, Journal of Medical Ethics, Neurology, Headache, Journal of Child Neurology, Neurologic Clinics, Surgery Journal, Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, and Medical Law International. He has contributed a dozen book chapters in leading treatises on medical law including the American College of Legal Medicine textbook Legal Medicine and Medical Ethics and the internationally acclaimed Legal and Forensic Medicine, which have been cited throughout the world.
